  • Ethiopian Cargo Hits Below the Belt of Brussels Airport

Brussels Airport continued to hurt from the departure of Ethiopian Cargo services from the airport

In January only, the Belgian airport recorded a big decline in airfreight demand and all happens due to the withdrawal of Ethiopian cargo services from the airport. Till 2015, this airport was one of the real success stories but suddenly saw a decline of 2.4 percent by year on year in January to almost 37 thousand tons.

    Actual situation of Brussels airport

It is not only Ethiopian cargo services caused that big dent to the airport but the full freighter demand also suffered and faced more than 11 percent decline on a year earlier to around 10 thousand tons, while integrator volumes were almost flat at 15,699 tons.

Belly cargo on other hand, remained high by 3 percent to around 12 thousand tons.

    What Brussels airport believes?

The airport said that the full freighter segment of its cargo department was still recovering from the departure of Ethiopian air cargo withdrawal after the carrier did not get the mandatory traffic rights to sustain its operations at the Brussels airport. The airline now nested to dutch hub Maastricht-Aachen airport.

Brussels airport company chief executive, Arnaud Feist believes that growth is all more striking because the air cargo services in Europe looked unwelcoming in the past year.

    Overall situation in the region

Overall, the Brussels was one of the fastest growing airports in the region and it recorded the demand increase of around 8 percent in 2014 to just under half million tons. On other hand, the busiest airport in the area, Frankfurt cargo facility recorded a decline of 2.3 percent on year-on-year in 2015.

Brussels in that particular time remained vigorous with a full year cargo volume growth of 7.8 percent because of the arrival of new cargo carriers and express services at the Belgian airport. It is not only the cargo where Brussels has shown a growth but at the passenger side, it showed an increase of 7 percent and handled more than 23.4 million passengers, an increase of around 15 percent.

    Ethiopian cargo to left Brussels

A spokesman to European cargo hub said that the Ethiopian cargo left the Brussels skies because they did get the air traffic rights to fly over the Belgian territories. In November this year, Brussels airport will no longer remain the home to Ethiopian airlines. The result is full freighter volume will decrease by 25 percent in the last two months compared to 2014.

When you search a good shipping provider for your business, then it is compulsory to choose the best option for your business. It is a basic step to do basic research for the selection of shipping companies available.

There are numerous shipping services in the market, each shipping service offers special freight forwarding policy and specific rules and rates. The market offers a variety of shipping sources. It is important to select a shipping service that offers you best discount options and specific opportunities for the safe delivery of your product. So do not select the shipping company that is based on an inflated price.

Think about the method of Shipping

Shipping method is a considerable element for the transportation of the shipment. Different shipments demand specific methods of shipping. For example perishables require shipping through air cargo because it is a speedy and safe mode of shipping.

But sometimes the option of shipping may be changed to LTL or FTL instead of air cargo. These options are cost effective but may take more time as compared to air mode of shipping.

Make a future Strategy for discount shipping

Use the right box for the right product. The use of the transportation management system is the best option to avoid these mistakes.

  • Abandoned Cargo Planes In Malaysia Claimed By Swift Air

Ever since the advertisement ran on media, this news of three unclaimed air freighters has created quite a stir around the globe

As these ads ran in the local print media about three Boeing 747 jets sitting in on the tarmac of Kuala Lumpur airport for more than a year, unclaimed, the world suddenly became evermore interested into knowing about these mysterious jets.

Although this kind of planes are extensively in use to deliver cargo to Africa and rest of the world on daily bases but do they present any sort of threat to the world? Why has no one come to claim them in all this time?

Swift Air Cargo, a Malaysia based cargo company ended all these speculations by stepping forward to tell the whole world that they own these three air cargo carriers, and they have been trying to retrieve them ever since they bought them in this June. The hurdle has come from the Malaysia’s Airport Authority due to a dispute over the paperwork.

When asked, Malaysia Airports answered it has identified ‘multiple owners’ of the planes and they need to be sure of the ownership before they handover the jets to anyone. Having said so, the authorities haven’t said anything about Swift Air’s claim of ownership yet.

Blue Peterson, chief executive officer, said that the Malaysia Airports has refused to give him access to his own planes saying they need to verify the paperwork first. Speaking to the BBC he said that it is ok if the officials wanted to see his registration papers “but the planes have yet to be registered as they must first undergo maintenance checks. And I can’t even go on the property to look at my own planes.”

Air Atlanta Icelandic is the Iceland based company to whom these planes were registered previously but deregistered in 2011 and 2012. Malaysia Airports said that it had ran advertisement in local print media that if the owners would not come forward till 21 December, they will scrape or sell the planes.

  • Sea Cargo Takes Lead After Panama Canal growth

The increase in the use of Panama Canal ports has caused air cargo industry to lose a huge market share to sea cargo industry

In Miami, an event under the title “Air and Sea Cargo Americas” was organised recently where Jaime Alvarez Price, senior director cargo at Copa Airlines said that there has been an increase in the number of shipping line services transiting the artery.

Over recent years, this increase has had a severe effect on the air cargo services as sea cargo has earned a huge share.

What’s going on with air cargo?

Price also added that on the marine side, there is more and more activity and since they are into airfreight, they are witnessing more and more airfreight being converted into sea freight services.

A huge number of ships has started coming into the port more frequently than ever before, like for instance, previously one ship would come to port in a week but now things have changed exceptionally as now there are two or three ships in a week.

    What’s the role of Panama?

Panama has become the backbone of sea cargo and after the expansion, experts say it is going to make matters worse for the airfreight as the number of shipping containers transiting the Panama Canal will increase once the project has completed. It will then allow larger vessels to pass through without any difficulty.

What will be the future of air cargo?

Mathieu Floreani, DHL Global Forwarding chief executive for the Americas has said that Panama’s air cargo industry has a God-given 0pportunity to benefit from as by this year’s industrial action. The haulers had been put off using the US west coast ports and there is also a long term unavailability of the truckers too.

Floreani also said that he has been into constant contact with many of his customers who used to come into LA, truck across the country to Miami and then fly right into Latin America. But now most of the companies go direct to Panama and then fly the cargo out of Panama.

  • Heathrow Impresses With Increasing Export

Heathrow exports are on the rise

Heathrow has listed salmon as one of the main exports in their cargo services indicating that flying fish are definitely a popularity that will remain. Salmon fish was one of the list alongside gold, jet engines and surprisingly raincoats. They all topped the cargo export but salmon was by far the largest with about 50 000 tonnes shipped through Heathrow.

Research also showed that the London airport exports was a whopping 345,575 tonnes of British goods and in price value more than 48 billion pounds worth.

When it comes to trading partners china is of great value. The export to china increases often and up till July 7.6 billion pounds of export goods were to china which is an increase of over a hundred per cent from the year before.

While it is currently behind America in export goods, America being at 14 billion pounds, it is highly expected that within a couple of years it will overtake and become the largest leading export base. That is of course, if current trends continue.

Based on export value four out five countries that hold the highest export trade are from Asia. This shows how important this region is to the export market.

Aside from the large amount of tones exported there were precious and valuable goods that contributed to the high price value of Heathrow export. The metals were worth 26 billion pounds and other jewelry around 3 billion and then diamonds at 800 million. All this annually is impressive for Heathrow.

Engines also played a huge part mostly due to Rolls Royce with many aircraft engines and components passing through Heathrow giving Britain a stable and firm position in the global aerospace industry. Britain’s industry worth in this part is 29 billion pounds a year and this places it second in the list. The previous year saw 3.5bn exports of aircraft engines, 1.9bn in aircraft engine parts and a 1.6bn value of other related components.

Other increasing exports include medical related items such as vaccines and this is mostly due to crises such as Ebola. This crisis saw an increase in human vaccine exports by almost 100 per cent.

Salmon in weight totaled to an export of 46,343 tonnes, a large amount equal to a significant amount of jumbo jets.

Fashion is not excluded from the British export market with 3,640 tonnes of clothes currently being exported and steadily increasing. The biggest increase is with raincoats and overcoats.

  • Air Cargo And Its Major Types

To transfer the freight by the use of aircraft cargo services is commonly known as air cargo. Air cargo is a rapid source of freight transportation

The beginning of the air cargo industry was very interesting. The first air cargo flight took place in the United States on 7th November 1910. The Wright Model B biplane was designed by the Wright brothers in the United States.

This cargo plane was used for the very first time to transfer packages containing 200 pound of silk.

What are other types of cargo?

According to the nature of the cargo properties it can be divided into two major classes, General cargo and Special cargo.

    What is General cargo

General cargo includes things of delicate nature, such as electronics, Jewelry, pharmaceuticals and wristwatches. Things of delicate nature, have very high value. The electronics industry accounts for around 40 percent of the value of the whole international air cargo industry.

The products related to electronics industry are transported very carefully. It is because these products links to delicate family so the industry wants to transfer these products through a reliable source.

The air cargo service is more reliable to transfer electronic products. But it is costly as compared to sea cargo service. By and large the value of the cargo is more important for the shipper as compared to shipping charges.

    What is Special cargo

Special cargo is very much different from the general. Special cargo includes the shipping of living organisms and the shipping of hazardous chemicals. Suitable environment and suitable conditions are very essential for the shipping of both classes.

For shipping animals and seafoods, appropriate temperature and refrigeration are very significant. Special cargo has different regulations as compared to general cargo.

Special cargo requires various inspections and numerous requirements, and not every airline can accept these items. Make sure that you advise in detail about special goods you want to transport. Because without knowing any detail can lead to additional charges and rejection of the shipment.

Items that are not allowed to transfer via air cargo

There are so many items which are in the list of prohibited goods and these goods are not allowed to be shipped through air cargo. Because these prohibited items are hazardous for the aircraft as well as for the lives of the passengers.

Explosives,Gases,Flammable liquid, Toxic and infectious items, lithium batteries, Magnetic substances without degaussing packaging, magnetic steel and other strong magnetic products,

Items dangerous to public health, Oxidizers, organic peroxides, radioactive materials & corrosive items,Powder, liquids, pastes, and other items with danger signs on their packaging and Biochemical products and infectious materials of all kinds.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has said the warm welcome to Heathrow up gradation plans. It is important to highlight that FTA had requested to double cargo investment at London Heathrow previously as well. The authorities never took it seriously earlier, but it’s never too late to step towards the right direction.

The plan to double cargo investment at Heathrow will have long lasting impacts on the growth of the UK economy as a whole. The freight industry will flourish and strengthen the foundation for growth and prosperity.

    Export Target 2020

Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland Kaye explained, Cargo is the back bone of the UK economy and Heathrow is a central “freight connector” for the world. He said, about 26% of total goods are being shipped by London Heathrow.

The new cargo investment plan will improve support facilities that will help to enhance cargo services. He said, we at London Heathrow are committed towards achieving export target. The UK government has set £1trn export target to be met by 2020.

    Air freight is crucial

The FTA has highlighted the importance of air freight and defined it as one of the most effective and efficient cargo channels. Its importance increases many folds in regards with pharma goods such as the high-value lifesaving drugs that require the fastest delivery channel.

No doubt air cargo is the fastest available medium of transporting such goods outside the country. The cargo investment will result in huge profits and portray strong image for London Heathrow.

    Fool Proof Cargo Arrangements

According to the details of the plan, the new pharmaceutical facility will be built at Heathrow along with arrangements to take care of temperature sensitive items and goods.

The expansion and improvements of cargo facilities will reduce the delays and congestion and will enable smooth processes for international cargo. The plan will help to make “London Heathrow” an international cargo hub with state of the art support facilities.
